Oscar de la Renta Spring/Summer 2013 - After 50 years in the industry, Oscar always knows how to take my breath away. He decided to have a little more fun with his Spring/Summer 2013 collection which featured pencil skirts paired with fitted jackets, tiered dresses in soft pastels, bead-embroidered gowns to my personal favorite look of the collection: the hot pink bustier with a feathered peplum that fanned out like wings over a pair of cocktail shorts which was worn by Cara Delevingne. Sophisticated and feminine elegance as always.
3.1 Phillip Lim Spring/Summer 2013 - With Joan Jett and Courtney Love as muses, his collection was everything from ’70s punk to ’90s grunge, and yes he made grunge be beautiful. There were so many pieces you just wanted to grab from the runway and go on with you day - dark floral dresses, printed biker jackets, jumpsuits, sheer tops, the iconic ‘I heart NY’ tee-shirt and even patchwork. I basically have my shopping list ready.
Carolina Herrera Spring/Summer 2013 - Paying tribute to the “very flirty, feminine” woman, her collection was nothing short of chiffon, organza, silk, tulle and georgette. From long, dreamy, lightly color-blocked dresses to high waisted beaded shorts that could go from day to night. “As always CH epitome of elegance” -Nina Garcia.
Charlotte Ronson Spring/Summer 2013 - Silk and leather combos, jackets paired with high waisted shorts, lots of midriff-baring tops, botanical prints pretty for day, and leather combinations perfect for night. Her collection automatically transports me to next summer. Cannot wait.
Christian Siriano Spring/Summer 2013 - Siriano has made me heart beat a little faster since his Project Runway days. His new collection is a total girly-gir’ls dream, with romantic and soft colors and shapes - pretty pinks, mints and pearls, very modern Barbie-like. Being original as usual, he is collaborating with Proper Attire to make condoms cute, which were handed out in the goody bags of the VIP’s. Profits of these will go to Planned Parenthood. Condoms for a cause.
Jenny Packham Spring/Summer 2013 - Having Angelina Jolie and Kate Middleton as number one clients, you know you Packham’s collection has to be top-notch. With more glam than ever, and having nearly every look dripping in Swarovski crystals, beading and sequins, it was all about glamour that shines. As the perfect ending touch all the models strutted down the runway in glizted-out Christian Louboutin pumps. By the way, I’m a huge fan of the twisted ponytails. Très chic.
Victoria Beckham Spring/Summer 2013 - Three colors: white, black and tangerine orange/red. Three features: Clean lines, modern silhouettes, and flat gladiator-boots by Manolo Blahnik. Besides her signature fitted dresses she presented tailored blazers, A-line skirts, button-down blouses, cigarette pants, miniskirts, maxi dresses and sporty mini dresses with pleated hemlines which show how she continues to evolve and grow as a designer. Even thought I’m still upset that the Spice Girls reunion only lasted four minutes at the Olympics, I do love everything Posh designs so I guess she can keep her day job. I wonder if there’s anything Victoria can’t do.
Vera Wang Spring/Summer 2013 - Her India inspired collection was all about texture, volume and print also featuring monochrome lace, brocade and rich gold embroidery. The purple short dress is my personal favorite one.
Donna Karan Spring/Summer 2012 - LOVE! ”This was Donna at her best” – Bianca Jagger. Enough said.
Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2013 - Looks like it’s going to be a 60’s spring next year. Jacobs collection can be summed up with white and black, and stripes on stripes on stripes. Needless to say, stripes are having a major moment.
Jason Wu Spring/Summer 2013 - Two words: Leather and Lace. Jason Wu gets me. I literally want everything. Nordstrom’s is having a virtual trunk show of the collection on their website, and you can pre-order the clothes from now until September 17th. Goodbye bank account.
DKNY Spring/Summer 2013 - Very New York, but I don’t know how I feel about this collection since it left me wondering two things: Will I ever wear stiletto sneakers? No. Will I ever wear a fanny pack? No. What is going on? I’m so confused. Stop with the nonsense. But besides these two things I did love the white leather, the good dose of denim, the perfect leather looks and the long flowing dresses.
DVF Spring/Summer 2013 - If there is one thing I know is that I want to live my life in DVF’s creations. She always manages to give us an impeccable colorful collection. This time models strudded down the runway wearing Google Glasses, which promise to be the next big thing in technology. We’ll see if the trend catches up next year, meanwhile checkout the DVF’s show filmed exclusively through Google’s Glass here.
Custo Barcelona Spring/Summer 2013 -Patchwork quilting of metallic, prints and sequins, shaggy fringe, crocheted embroidery-embellishments, doily hems, upholstery-like brocade and vintage wallpaper-esque patterns - you can never have too much of anything.
Prabal Gurung Spring/Summer 2013 - I’m totally loving the drop waist loose silhouettes. These were also spotted at Marc by Marc Jacobs and Belstaff…how many does it take to make it a trend?
Belstaff Spring/Summer 2013 - New York Fashion Week was the best place possible stage for the revival of the Belstaff brand. “The collection is based on the romance of travel,” said Martin Cooper the creative director of the brand since last year. Down the runway oversized biker jackets made its way along with triped canvas shirtdresses, slouchy pants and brilliant wooden wedges.
Alexander Wang Spring/Summer 2013 - “Fierce but controlled. Leather is already everywhere for fall, but Wang gave it a new lease on life for spring. It was all about boxy silhouettes with surgical slashes revealing the body and bringing to mind animal markings.” So edgy, I love it.
Hervé Léger by Max Azria Spring/Summer 2013 - Total knock-out with A-line dresses, leather harnesses to the brand’s signature uber-sexy bandage dresses.
Ralph Lauren Spring/Summmer 2013 - A cross between the Spanish matador look with Uptown Chic, Ralph’s collection is taking us through an exotic journey this season. The most amazing moment happened when Ryan Lochte touched Anna Wintour’s bare knee and everyone saw her face go from bemused acceptance to utter shock. Priceless.
And my ultimate fashion week obsession: The last three looks from the Michael Kors Spring/Summer 2013 collection. These three black floor-length gowns with glam cutouts are beyond flawless. Now I just need to get invited somewhere amazing where I can wear them…
In summary, what did we learn from NYFW S/S 2013?:
The harness look - major
Drop waist silhouettes are officially “in”
Brocade - Your statement piece of the season will come in brocade.
Mid-riffs, crop tops, and bra tops - you better get those abs in shape.
